When will I receive my payment?

Timing of these economic stimulus payments depends on how you received your most recent refund (either 2018 or 2019).

  • For direct deposit: The first payments are scheduled to be paid the week of April 13, 2020. This will account for about 60 million payments. After that, the IRS will issue payments on a weekly basis going forward.
  • For mail: The IRS will begin issuing checks in late April or the first week in May 2020, beginning with households with the lowest Adjusted Gross Income first. There will be roughly five million checks going out each week. So it could take up to 20 weeks to get all of the checks out.

For security reasons, the IRS plans to mail a letter about the economic impact payment to the taxpayer’s last known address within 15 days after the payment is paid. The letter will provide information on how the payment was made and how to report any failure to receive the payment. If a taxpayer is unsure they’re receiving a legitimate letter, the IRS urges taxpayers to visit IRS.gov first to protect against scam artists.
